History

  • November 2015: School in the Square’s charter was approved! The charter was one of only three charters approved out of a pool of 51 applicants.
  • March 2016: The founders secured a location for the school: 120 Wadsworth Avenue in Washington Heights, NY.
  • Spring 2016: Throughout the Spring of 2016, the founders worked tirelessly to spread the word about the new school: knocking on doors, hosting open houses and attending student recruitment events.
  • Summer 2016: The summer of 2016 was spent preparing the building for the coming school year. All of the walls were painted, floors were replaced, bathrooms were cleaned and updated, new furniture was brought in, closet spaces were turned into offices, walls were knocked down, walls were put up, projectors were installed - it was a big job!
  • August 2016: School in the Square opens with its first cohort of 105 6th graders and a full staff, a day many years and much effort in the making.
  • September 2016: S2 welcomed its founding families to the school with breakfast on its beautiful rooftop overlooking the GW Bridge, followed by information sessions and fun activities. Included in those activities was the writing and signing - by every student - of S2’s first Bill of Rights. You can find the Bill of Rights posted in S2’s halls as a reminder of the school’s philosophy of respect, dedication to lifelong learning, and community first.
  • October 2016: S2 takes its first field trip! Students enjoyed a day at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), learning about contemporary artists and being inspired to make art of their own!
  • November 2016: S2 forms its first sports team! A co-ed basketball team with 14 members who would play as part of the Boys and Girls Club League of the Bronx.
  • December 2016: S2 held its first Academic Achievement Awards Ceremony, an event since held at the close of every academic semester. This event gives students the opportunity to have pride in themselves and cheer on their peers for all of the hard work and growth of the previous months.
  • March 2017: S2 helds its first community event, a screening of the documentary film Beyond Measure. The screening was attended by over 70 people from the S2 community and beyond. A lively discussion ensued after the film, led by a panel of educators, about the future of education and the importance of staying dynamic and innovative in schools.
  • May 2017: S2 held its first talent show! Students really impressed with an array of acts including a hip hop dance performance by the school’s dance team, a few songs and raps, an animation display, acting, and piano playing. Such a creative and brave class!
  • June 2017: S2 hired its first principal, Ms. Carrie Amon, to join the leadership team. Carrie brings over 30 years of experience in education, a love for helping both students and teachers meet their potential, and a flair for creativity!
  • Summer 2017: S2 held its first summer school program, which was a hit! Students received extra help in the academic areas they struggled with over the past year, and had a lot of fun doing it.
  • July 2017: With its second cohort of students on the way, S2 expanded its staff significantly. Over the summer, instructional and non-instructional staff members spent time getting to know each other during various professional development events and fun summer activities, including a NYC scavenger hunt!
  • August 2017: S2 welcomed its second cohort of 6th graders, and welcomed back its first class of 7th graders. With over 200 students and more than 25 staff members, S2 is ready for its second year, which promises to be even better than the first!
