Students excited to be back at school

School in the Square is thrilled to commence its second year as a middle school serving Washington Heights and the surrounding areas. With many lessons learned after an incredible first year, this year will most certainly be even better. We couldn’t be happier to see the faces of our inaugural class returning after their summer break, and we are equally as excited to learn the names and faces of our new class of 6th graders and their families.

This week began with two days of orientation, during which we welcomed half of the 6th and 7th graders on Monday, and the remaining half of each class on Tuesday. Both days began with the families of 6th graders gathering on the rooftop for a breakfast of bagels and cream cheese. They were welcomed warmly by Mr. Meyers and Ms. Amon who detailed the overall philosophy of the school and relayed some essential information. After breakfast, students were separated from their families and all were lead in small groups on tours of the building, much of which is new or renovated since last year. Highlights include science-specific classrooms with work benches, a reading nook, an art room, and re-decorated classrooms suited to the new co-teaching model we will be implementing this year to serve our students even better.

After the tours, students spent time in different classrooms participating in fun activities to get to know each other and their new teachers. The morning was filled with smiling faces and laughter despite the natural fears that come with attending a new school and meeting new teachers and classmates. At the end of the morning, everyone gathered again in the dining hall for a final activity: students sat in large circles and passed around balls of yarn as they each shared one goal for the coming year. In the end, staff and students were connected by a web of common goals, all striving to do better and support each other in the effort to do the best we can as members of the S2 community and as lifelong learners.

We welcomed 7th graders and their parents in the afternoon, where they too were greeted by Mr. Meyers and Ms. Amon along with a helping of ice cream. We were thrilled to see students hugging after being apart over the summer and excited to be back at school with their old teachers and friends. The 6th graders aren’t the only ones in for a new school experience and the 7th graders learned quickly that, as part of the natural growing process of a new school, many changes can occur from year to year: new school policies, new teachers and staff, and renovated facilities. Another important change for our 7th graders is a heightened level of expectations for their academic growth. With an amazing team of teachers, old and new, and a robust team of support staff, we are confident that our 7th graders are set up to excel. Throughout the afternoon, they participated in activities that reminded them about the value of community, the bill of rights they signed a year prior, and what it means to be a leader. Our class of 7th graders are up to the task and we know they will adapt quickly, grow academically, and set a great example for their younger peers.

A big thanks to all the families of our students who attended, you’re an essential part of our community and it’s always great to have your participation “in the square”. A truly fantastic couple days to kick off the start of the 2017-2018 school year.
