August 17, 2020

Dear S2 Families,

We hope that you and your family are doing well, staying healthy and enjoying the summer months. Thank you for attending our family meeting last month and completing the survey communicating your preferences for the upcoming school year. We were able to get responses from 88% of our families! A true testament to the partnership we have all been committed to strengthening .

Over the last few weeks we have been listening to updates provided by health officials, local government officials and hearing directly from you, our students and dedicated staff about how we can be most supportive during these challenging times. Our primary focus will always be safety for those in our community and continuous access to high quality instruction for all students. With that in mind, we have decided to begin remote instruction for our 7th and 8th graders on September 3rd and our 6th graders will begin remotely on September 8th. The idea to extend remote learning through October 2nd is grounded in our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, staff and families. While there will need to be adjustments along the way (and knowing that all plans are subject to change in the event of an increase in positive cases in our city and state), this approach allows for a slower and more cautious reopening. Next week you will receive information regarding orientation and material pick up.

Updated Plan

Remote learning will continue until October 2nd and we will review/ determine return models on a monthly basis.

Possibility to provide opportunities for students in need of more support to come into the building as necessary.

Monthly Decision Making Process

To inform the school reopening plan for the upcoming month and plan for students in need of possible additional support we will...

Collect and review data around community health rate, testing availability and

Identify students in need of support and create plans for student success

Coordinate family meeting to share data and administer survey

Family Meeting Dates

  • Family Meeting September 24th 9am & 5pm
  • October decision shared by September 28th
  • Family Meeting October 22nd 9am & 5pm
  • November decision shared by October 28th
  • Family Meeting November 24th 9am & 4:30pm
  • December decision shared by December 1st

During the monthly meetings we will work together to determine which model is best for the upcoming month. Possible monthly return models include:

Remote Model - All Students and all staff are learning and working together from home

Remote Plus Model (new) - Grade Level Teams determine specific students in need of additional support, based on attendance, grades, etc.  A new and individualized learning plan will be created for them. This may include but is not limited to...being in the building with a teacher to support, creating additional support/ scaffold material, mandated office hours for specified subjects, PrimeTime teacher or other S2 staff providing organizational tools, materials, and/ or check-in support.

Hybrid Model - As outlined in our reopening plan - Team A and Team B - 5 days in school and 5 days remote

Fully In School - Everyone returns to the school building

We have tried our best to create a plan that has flexibility,  the health and safety of our students, teachers and families.  Information is constantly changing and we will continually reassess risks and challenges. We hope this updated plan shows our continued commitment to prioritize the health and welfare of  our families, staff and community, while maintaining the academic rigor for our students.

With much respect,

The S2 Family
