Mrs. Monica Merchant
Founding Director of Operations
Monica has worked in public charter schools in New York City for over ten years. In 2005 she began her career as a special education teacher and coordinator. After two years in this role, she joined the administrative team to improve upon the school's existing operational systems. Monica's role in this capacity continued to grow and she became the Director of Operations two years later. In 2011, Monica became the Founding Director of Operations at East Harlem Scholars Academy, where she helped to build the school from the ground up. Monica spearheaded the development of a vast range of systems and routines and managed all of the non-instructional pieces of the school. In 2013, Scholars Academy replicated and Monica became the Director of Operations of both schools, managing the startup of East Harlem Scholars Academy II while continuing to run the operations at East Harlem Scholars Academy. Monica received her Bachelor's degree in psychology from Anderson University. While at Anderson, she spent a semester studying abroad in England and had the unique opportunity to obtain an internship at an elementary school there. Monica was a four-time All-American in track and cross-country before heading to Indiana University to obtain her Master’s Degree in kinesiology. As a Teach For America Corps Member, Monica received her second Master’s Degree in Special Education from Pace University in New York City. As a mother and resident of Washington Heights, Monica is very excited to be part of the founding team at School in the Square. She feels strongly that the neighborhood needs more educational options for middle schoolers and loves the progressive model of S2. She feels extremely lucky to be on a team of such dedicated, humble, and passionate educators who are committed to making this school special.
