School in the Square (S2) engages, educates and empowers adolescents in Washington Heights to respond mindfully and creatively to life’s opportunities and challenges. S2 draws its name from the concept of the public square, where communities come together to solve problems and celebrate successes. We envision S2 as a place where students, families and educators are seen, heard and inspired, and where students build the academic foundations, emotional intelligence and leadership skills necessary to excel in college and professional life. In line with our commitment to equity and diversity, S2 is dedicated to serving all students by providing a differentiated and inclusive learning environment.
Mr. Jean Martinez
Founding Coordinator of Sports Programs & Physical Education Teacher
Jean started workingwith New York City youth eight years ago. He began his career as a group leader at the All The Way Program located inside P.S. 48 in Manhattan. Jean’s passion for working with youth in sports allowed him the opportunity to coach basketball at Riverdale Country School. For two consecutive summers, Jean was a Sports Coach at ESF Summer camps through Manhattan Athletics. In 2014, Jean was a program director for Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation at MS 462 in the Bronx. His latest experience was at the Madison Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx where he used his passion for sports and youth development to create one of the most prestigious sports and fitness programs for youth in NYC as Athletic Director. Jean received his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology at Lehman College 2012, and has his Master's Degree in Sports Management from Southern New Hampshire University. Jean is very excited to be a part of School in The Square because he knows that the team values his experience and ideas. He is also thrilled to work with the community in which he was born in raised (Washington Heights), giving him the opportunity to give back to its youth and their families.
