She spent three years in a self-contained classroom teaching all subjects, and two years specializing in English Language Arts. During her time teaching fifth grade, she lead many literacy based staff initiatives, including coaching teachers, running staff professional development, making school wide curricular decisions, implementing a school wide guided reading program, and even completing an action research project with teachers to help sustain classroom libraries and make independent reading a staple in all classrooms.
While teaching fifth grade, Ms. Hertz obtained her Master’s Degree in Literacy from Hunter College in order to become a certified Reading Specialist, where she graduated with a 4.0 GPA and an Excellence in Teaching Award in Childhood Literacy Education. During her time at Hunter, Ms. Hertz focused her studies on lifelong reading motivation and practices within schools that help students develop a love of reading. During her time in Hunter’s program, she became immersed in best practices in literacy, and gained experience working in the Literacy Space with students, analyzing data, diagnosing literacy difficulties, and providing action plans for improving literacy skills. Recently, Ms. Hertz taught second grade at a city-wide gifted and talented school, where she learned about differentiation and working with students with exceptionalities. She is really excited about joining the School in the Square team in order to share her love for reading and passion for widespread literacy.
