Jumanne Saunders' Bio
Principal, Bilingual Early Childhood Center and Elementary School

A school and youth program leader in New York City for more than 20 years, Jumaane is deeply committed to community building.  He began his teaching career as a chemistry instructor and grade supervisor at the School of the Future and earned both his Masters of Education, Educational Leadership and his Masters of Arts, Educational Politics and Finance at Columbia University’s Teachers College.  He was the founding Elementary Principal and School Designer for the Brooklyn Prospect Charter School, then Secondary Principal of the International School of Sosua in the Dominican Republic before returning to NYC as our elementary school principal.


Under Jumaane’s leadership at Prospect, 82% of students in grades 3-5 were proficient in math (compared to 48% in the community school district and 49% in New York State) and 71% in ELA (compared to 52% in the community school district and 45% in New York State) in 2018.  In 2019, 82% of students were proficient in math (compared to 50% in both the community school district and New York State) and 72% proficient in ELA (54% in the community school district and 45% New York State).
