Yeou-Jey Vasconcelos' Bio
Head of Schools

Yeou-Jey Vasconcelos joined School in the Square in the Spring of 2023. She has overseen the expansion of our bilingual and biliteracy programs, enrichment opportunities, and academic supports and structures to better serve the vibrant and diverse needs of the community. Yeou-Jey believes deeply that we are a stronger community when we create and honor space for a multitude of viewpoints.

Before coming to School in the Square, Yeou-Jey was the Principal of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. At LaGuardia, she opened doors for all students by doubling access to advanced/college-level courses in both academics and the arts. Yeou-Jey’s commitment to education and the arts was reflected in her work partnering with cultural and media institutions - including New York Philharmonic, Paul Taylor Dance Company, United States Marine Band, Marc Jacobs, The Juilliard School, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and CNN – so that students could learn directly from leading artists and professionals.

Earlier, as Principal of Talent Unlimited High School and founder of Manhattan District Arts Consortium, she was recognized for her commitment to equity and student access. She closed achievement gaps between general education students and students with disabilities, oversaw the renovation of arts spaces, and championed restorative practices that built trust, strengthened community, and supported student growth.

Throughout her career, Yeou-Jey has combined her love of learning with her belief in the power of education to open opportunities for young people. She is deeply committed to creating schools where students can thrive academically, creatively, and personally.
